First post in a long time

I thought I would go ahead and post to our blog site. I realize it has been a long time since you have heard from us in the department. Here is the latest and the greatest. It is almost Thanksgiving vacation and all are anxiously awaiting Tuesday at 5:00 when the class action ceases. Business Club had a speaker in September, Jim VanGoethm the owner of Midwest Electric Service spoke about his career from college to his owning his business. The business club also helped the alumni office with the young alumni tail gate lunch at homecoming. It was good to see many of you alumni there.

The consumer behavior class went to Wichita last week to an Advertising Federation of Wichita meeting. We viewed a film showing the 2006 Advertising Federation ADDY award winners. It was informative and interesting.

Dr. Cantwell's Public Relations class is doing a project on the service emphasis component of TC 101 from this past fall. It should be interesting. I know may of you have received invitations to the event. We hope to see you there.

Students will now be required to complete a portfolio of coursework and have it assessed by the members of the business department. They must complete the portfolio in order to receive a passing grade in Business Policy and Ethics. We have developed portfolio guidelines for them to follow with specific objectives fitting under each of our goals. Our plan is to evaluate students on work they are already doing. We will see how it goes and make adjustments accordingly.

We are still planning on our mentoring program. We will run a pilot program with the students in Managerial Accounting this spring. Consequently, I will be in need of around 30 mentors. A big thank you to those of you who have expressed interest in the program already. I will be contacting you and others this January to make final program arrangements.

The Bean Counter is still up and running. For those of you who are graduates from more than 5 years ago, the Bean Counter is a student run coffee house located in the Schlicting Center. It is run out of the business department. We have a manager, Shelby Miller, and staff who run the operation. We recently had the state health inspector come by and do her six month to annual inspection. The coffee house passed with flying colors. We also paid the state food service operators license this week. Sales have been up this year thanks to several special programs.

We hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving and safe traveling.
